What is a back-up plan?
You might have decided on your first choice career path or first choice
course but what will you do if this doesn’t work out?
This is your back-up plan. It’s what you plan to do if your first option
doesn’t work out. You have your plan A, but you also have plan B
and maybe even plan C up your sleeve just in case.
Why do I need a back-up plan?
For some people their back-up plan is their comfort blanket. It’s not
having to worry if things go wrong because they have already
decided what they will do in different scenarios.

This is Josie.
Josie wants to be a nurse.
Josie is aiming for grade 5s and 6s in all of her
subjects but she is worried that she might not
pass her maths. If she doesn’t pass her maths
she won’t get on to the A level course that she
is aiming for.
Her back-up plan is to either resit her GCSEs
for 1 year or to study the applied science level
2 BTEC and resit her maths GCSE alongside it.
She has applied for all of these options.
Josie has a back-up plan.
Be like Josie.
